WHAT TYPES OF SOUND INSULATION CAN I EXPECT?

The type of treatment provided by the Program will vary from house to house.  Typical treatment includes installation of storm windows and storm doors and treating potential noise paths such as attic vents and crawl space vents.  Storm windows and storm doors provide better noise reduction than double pane windows.

The FAA requires that the treatment reduce indoor noise levels  by an average of at least 5 decibels in spaces used for noise-sensitive activities to assure a noticeable improvement.  In addition, the indoor noise level at the conclusion of the treatment must be 45 DNL or less.  It may not be possible to achieve a 5 decibel noise reduction in some homes. In those cases, sound insulation will not be attempted because it would not achieve a sufficient improvement over the existing condition. Under FAA guidelines, mobile homes will not qualify because they cannot be effectively insulated for sound.
